Usually the remaining file is in a System Restore Point, which antivirus
programs don't touch. Virus removal instructions for Windows XP usually
state that after a virus is removed, that you should turn off System
Restore, and then turn it back on again to flush all Restore Points which
might contain viruses. As for the scrnsize.exe, I don't find that file on
my system, or any mention of it in any of the Google groups. If the file is
gone, either removed by an antivirus program, or an unclean program
uninstall, perhaps the Startup mention for that file wasn't removed as it
should have been. As long as your system is operating fine, and only giving
a message on boot that the file is missing:
Click your Start button
Click Run
Type: msconfig
Click the OK button
When the System Configuration Utility opens click the Startup tab, scroll
through the list of Startup items, and see if you can find one that has the
path to scrnsize.exe which you noted in your post. You might have to drag
the Location field to the right to see the full Command field path. When
you find it, click to remove the checkmark to the left of it. Then click the
APPLY and OK buttons. Close any other Programs, then reboot your system.
The first time that you boot after removing an item from the Startup tab,
you will get a message saying that you've chosen to use Selective Startup,
click the little box to the left of: Don't show this message again, then
click the OK button. Subsequent boots shouldn't show that message, and the
error message for not being able to find scrnsize.exe should be gone. If
you can't find the reference to scrnsize.exe
on the msconfig Startup tab, you might have to search with the Registry
Editor for it and delete it manually.

When I startup windows I am getting the following messages displayed:
Windows cannot find c:\windows\system32\scrnsize.exe
Desktop Could not load or run c:\windows\system32\scrnsize.exe specified in the registry
My virus software recently detected a virus and I followed the
instructions to delete it but there was a file remaining that I could not
delete, has this caused the problem and if so how do I get rid of it?
Also when opening a particular folder I am presented with numerous
documents with the suffix .IDX What are these and is it safe to remove them?
