Message no longer exists?

Wondering if I have some setting messed up -- I see a lot of threads
where the first msg in the thread seems to no longer be available on the
server -- seems like it has expired. Maybe some other msgs in the thread
are expired too, but later in the thread are un-expired msgs. Seems
wierd to me

Looked all thru the newsreader settings (netscape newsreader) and dont
see anything obvious I should change -- is this normal?

2'nd question: When I mark a thread to "watch" and come back the next
day, the "watch" symbol is often missing so I miss what I was watching.
And sometimes I have to select "watch thread" twice to get it to watch
in the first place. Comments?

Thanks

Are you using msnews.microsoft.com news-server, or some other server?
If "some other" server, it could be that not all the messages are arriving
on the server, or some are arriving later than the responses to them. It
can take anything between minutes and several hours for messages to
promulgate around the world, depending on source and peering arrangements.
Using news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.frontpage.client
I have noticed the occasional thread missing the original question, but only
1 thread in a month.

You could try resetting (or Netscape equivalent) the newsgroup, to reload
all the headers/messages.

I use OE for newsreading, and have never used Netscape. The Watch function
works in OE until the thread drops off the server (several months), can't
comment for Netscape.

I see it as well, but it only happens every-so-often (like yesterday)...like all the RE:'s are there and the OP is gone, then most of the time they come back within an hour or so.

With the older messages the OP doesn't seem to come back and then the RE's disappear as well. Seems strange that the Replys stick around for a while after the OP is purged.

What you are seeing is "spam" messages that have been removed by the news group
administrator.
When these are removed, you will see the header, but when you click the header the server
responds with "no longer available"
The header then disappears from your news reader.

steve,

no, they're normal messages that appear disassociated from the OP, sometimes they're restored sometimes not.

was happening a lot yesterday and last night, and I'm seeing some of it this morning but not on this ng.
