message flag set without any messages recieved

for some reason my "message flag" appears and when I check my folders
there are no new messages. I have found that if I perform an "empty
delete folder" even when the "delete folder" is empty the "message flag"
will turn off.

Can anyone tell my why this is happening and more importantly how I stop
this behavior.

Do you have any rules in effect that could be automatically moving or
deleting incoming mail?

No, All of my rules move messages to other folders and then stop
processing. It is the strangest thing. The new message flag will appear
in the task bar and no messages are waiting. I then select the deleted
folder, which is empty, and select empty deleted items and then the flag
goes away. It happens a few times a day.
I just turned on message logging. Hopefully that might help a bit.
Maybe a non malicious poltergeist
