message deleted automatically after reading

In Outlook 2000, after reading a message, and going to the next unread
message, the program deletes the message that I just read. It does not go
into my deleted folder, it is just gone. How can I keep this from happening?
 
Do you have a filter or view set to hide read items? (See View > Current
View.)

ps - you can start Outlook 1 time with the /cleanviews command line switch
to delete all custom views and have outlook reset the default views back to
their first run condition.
