Message cannot be found error.

Hi,

I just did a system recovery on my friend's Vista PC. I restored all his
personal files from the backup taken prior and imported the exported mail
messages. Everything appeared to be okay, but there were a few folders that
imported with different names. We manually renamed some folders and and
copied messages into one of the new folders. Everything appeared to be fine
at first, but the next morning all but one of the messages in that folder
show "Message cannot be found --- The contents of this message cannot be
found" in the body of each message.

I'd like to point out that I already searched for answers on this topic and
they mostly seemed to point to the AV software scanning on email. We've been
using Trend-Micro for a few years and the email scanning was already disabled.

Any ideas on how we can fix this? I can restore the exported folders from
the backup again if required. Thank you in advance.

I think what is happening is your antivirus software is deleting the message
out of the folder and the result is a mismatch with the Winmail database and
that generates the error. Compacting and repairing the database might fix
the issue (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) but it will keep happening unless you
prevent the antivirus from doing that. You can get less invasive antivirus
products.

Hi Steve. Thanks for the tip. I'll try this.

Like I said, I'd been using this AV software for years and had the email
scanning disabled. Is there another setting I should be checking? Thanks.

Some AV programs have to uninstalled and "custom" reinstalled to fully
disable email scanning. You may even have to remove that program and
reinstall another program, such as Windows Security Essentials - free and
has no email component to be concerned about.
