Merging Active Directory trees

J

John

I am working with a client that has just purchased
another company. Both companies are running on Active
Directory Windows 2000 domains. We are wanting to merge
one Active Directory Forest into the other one. I want
to keep both domains separate but just want to merge the
two trees. How can this be performed?

Thanks,
John

Hello John and thanks for your question,

You have to create two new domains in two new different domain tress in an
existing or new forest, then migrate in domain recourses with example ADMTv2
(Active Directory Migration Tool)

ADMTv2 can be found here:

Thanks for the quick reply.

I am still confused. The company I am wanting to merge
is running Active Directory and Exchange 2000. It is the
only Active Directory server in the network. Why would I
have to create a new domain in both domain trees? Also,
if I merge the domain that is also running Exchange 2000
into the other domain, how will this effect Exchange?
Will I have to have the Exchange server join the new
domain?

Thanks,
John

Chris is talking about merging two disparate namespaces into one. You could
create a new tree in the existing forest and just migrate to that. It all
depends on how you wish to configure your DNS trees. I would think the best
bet would be to create a new tree in the existing forest and just migrate
the one domain - that's a lot less work.
