I'm trying to buy a new computer and the sales person is telling me that I
need to upgrade to 2GB in order for windows vista premium to run properly is
this correct? Does anyone know if this is true? or is 1GB sufficient?

Vista loves RAM, the more you give it, the better. So the sales person is
technically correct when you take into account the operating systems needs
plus applications you plan on running on top of the OS. I personally am
running Vista on 2 GBs of RAM and it runs great, I also have Vista Business
running on another machine with 512 MBs of RAM, it is slow but not annoying.
My brother is running Vista Business on 1.2 GBs of RAM and it runs really
smooth with lots of apps installed since January, hasn't groggy and boots up
nicely. But it wouldn't hurt to go with the 2 GBs since most systems will
soon come with such a minimum.

With 1GB Vista home premium will 'work' but will be sluggish at best.
The sales person is correct in advising you to go with 2GB.

Yes and no, it should "Work" with 1GB but you will probably improve the
speed with 2GB. It depends to some extent what kind of work you will be
doing with it.

To get the best result possible you want to get 2GB of exactly the same
memory, it is always best to buy memory from the same place at the same
time if you can possibly do that, however it sounds like the sales
person is offering sensible advice with a view to getting you the best
possible performance so take his advice and make sure what you get is
compatible with what's already in there.

(Combinations will often work but the overall speed will be set by the
slowest, cheap memory usually = cheap results)

There's no hard and fast answer to this question; it depends entirely
upon what you plan on doing with the computer, and what its other system
specifications are. For most household uses, 1Gb of RAM would be more
than adequate, provided that none of it is to be siphoned off for use by
the video adapter. My Vista Business system has 1Gb of RAM and performs
quite satisfactorily.

However, if you're going to be doing memory-intensive tasks such as
video editing, more RAM would be a good idea.

1 GB is sufficient. Yes, 2 GB will make it snappier, but it depends on
what you are doing with the machine. I was running 1 GB for a while, and
it worked fine. I upgraded to 3 GB and it's faster. But, I didn't have a
problem with 1 GB. 512 MB, however, is way too low! :) Trust me on that
one! ;)

Salesman always try to tell you that you "need" more.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. My ThinkPad came with 1GB and Vista Business
64. With the stock RAM, it was very slow. Useable, but slow. Installing an
additional 2 GB made it fly. I am very happy with Vista, but it does need a
lot of RAM to run well.

By design, a laptop has to siphon off a portion of system RAM for use
by the video adapter. If you'll re-read my post, you'll note that such
a condition was identified as a "bad thing" for performance. And, of
course, let us not forget that "adequate performance" is an entirely
subjective standard. Performance that I would find wholly inadequate
might seem just fine for you. (Or vice-versa.)
