I recently doubled my memory with an extra card.I had to re-instal XP now
when my PC boots up the first screen shows only my original amount of pre
installed memory....how would I get my computer to recognize the newly added
memory as it did before?

Are you certain that the extra card is compatible with your computer?
Is the new card firmly inserted in place?
Does the BIOS see the added memory?
You have a hardware problem.

Thanks for replying, when i first installed the card it was picked up.I
really am a luddite so please keep things simple.....When the PC boots up
the first screen where its black with some text at the top , where BIOS is
mentioned , the last line says 128 of RAM .I installed a further 128 which
use to show.Since my re-install of XP its gone back to it's original. When XP
is re-installed(Iformatted before I re-installed) should it pick up the
extra memory or is there something I should do? Lastly is there a
way(simply) to check the extra RAM is there?

thanks for your help

Hi,
That black screen contains the BIOS information and if you fitted an extra
128M then that screen should show exactly what is physically fitted in the
PC. (Re-installing XP has no affect on that info)
If I were you I would remove both the modules and put one in one at a time
and see if both modules are working. i.e. fit one boot up then shutdown and
remove the first module and fit the second in the same slot.
If both are recognised as 128M then put them in together and make sure the
clips on the side are locked fully and post back the result.

Neil thanks

When you say module you mean the green 'card'? Isnt the original built in
and therefore hard to get at?

Hi,
Memory is referred to as modules (they are small circuit boards) with gold
edge connector all the way along one edge. When you say the other is built
in do you have a laptop?? if it is a desktop PC then there should be a
similar module to the one you have fitted in the connector slot next to it.
