Memory

Hi All,

I recently purchased a 512 SDram memory chip and insrted it next to the
original 512 SDram chip in my machine. Before inserting i went to start -->
run --> cmd and entered mem. The result was

655360 bytes total conventional memory
655360 bytes available to ms-dos
593168 largest executable program size

1048576 bytes total contiguous extended memory
0 bytes available contiguous extended memory
941056 bytes available XMS memory
MS-DOS resident in High Memory Area.

After (rebooting) i inserted the new memory chip and, executed start --> run
--> cmd - typed in MEM but got the same information as previous.

I was hoping to see double the amount of RAM. Does anyone know of an
application that can check what RAM i have on my computer. Can someone also
explain the above MEM information.

Regards.

The DOS mem utility is not the right utility to use as it shows the memory
configuration for the DOS emulation on the command window.

Better is, while holding down the windows key, press the 'Pause' key
(usually next to 'Scroll Lock'). In the window that appears, the bottom of
the 'General' tab should show the processor speed and the amount of
installed memory.

Yes. If the insalled memory appears, you have the right type. If it
doesn't, you have the wrong type.

This answer is not as flippant as it may appear because, generally,
motherboards only work with one type of memory.

Remove the memory and see what it says for a start. Compare with what it
says in your motherboard manual.

You might get details using Everest but physical examination can be more
certain:
This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about
your computer:
Everest Home Edition (freeware)
