memory usage

Something wierd happened to my computer. In the Windows
Task Manager, in the processes tab, memory usage per each
item is too high. For example explorer.exe uses 50 Mb RAM
instead of about 20 Mb. In the performance tab, Page File
memory is about 800 Mb instead of 200 Mb. Programs are
running too slow, because there is no free memory.

I scanned computer with the latest Norton Anti Virus, but
there is no one virus found.

Is there any way to solve the problem and decrease memory
usage per each service?

Click start > Run > type in "msconfig" without quotes > startup (TAB),
disable any unnecessary programs that might be starting up with syste,=m.

Assuming you know what you're talking about with those figures,
I'd suggest you have adware infection/s. Get Adaware and Spybot
S&D as a minimum, update them, and scan for adware. There are
lots of other adware killers out there if you want to look for
htem.

The amount of memory used by Explorer is a function very much of how
many instances you have opened on how many windows and their complexity
(for example how many have files with ancillary information for explorer
to cache). 50 MB is not unusual. You can help by not having Folder
Options set to open each folder in its own window (which rapidly makes a
mess of the desktop anyway) and in Folder Options - View, not having
'launch folder windows in a separate process'

Page file usage as indicated by Task Manager can be very misleading -
see my page www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm and use the tool linked from
the 'How big should the page file be' in the penultimate para, to find
out how much actual use there is. If large, it may well be associated
with Norton; their Live Update and that latest AV have been identified
as cause of troubles with VM usage, so try removing it
