I have 1.536.00MB total physical memory
783.45MB available memory
2.00GB virtual memory
1.92GB available virtual memory
and 1.88GB page file space My question is why the huge difference in
total physical memory from total avaialable memory of 753 MB ??
thanks for help, o7ns

And there are no programs running other than logged on and explorer .

No way.

Right-click the task bar, and choose Task Manager.

Look to see how many Processes are running.

Windows will, by design, always attempt to find some use, anything
whatever that might potentially be of some benefit, for every bit of
the installed RAM. Unused memory should perhaps be more accurately
described as "useless" memory because that it what it actually
represents - memory for which Windows has so far been totally unable
to find any possible use for.

For further information on memory management in Windows XP see the
article by the late Alex Nichol MVP at

Good luck

Thanks .That is alot of unexplained memory use but your info is what I will
consider an acceptable explaination, I really had no idea ! With a 512MB
stick the avail and physical difference was nothing this great but after
installing a 1GB stick in slot two this huge difference was evident .I will
consider it normal .
