Memory Usage Windows Defender

Humpty Dumpty

In Task Manager I can see that MsMpEng.exe is consuming a lot of memory,
both physical and Virtual Memory (more than 60 MB of the latter). I've
learned that this process is related to Windows Defender (am I right?).
It is my feeling that this slows down my computer noticeable. I am afraid of
disabling this service for obvious reasons, and if change its status from
"automatic" to "manual", I get a warning from Windows. I am protected by
Avast! AV and IObit Security, which use, too, a great lot of memory.
Please, comment on the questions implicit in this message.

Thank you very much,

And how much memory is installed on your PC?
Does Iobit Security run in the background, or is it a program you have to
run?
And assuming you have the free version, you could in any case uninstall it
to see what difference that makes.

You might want to consider dumping Windows Defender and IObit Security and
replace them with Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a free download and
together with Windows firewall makes a competent and low resource use
combination that shows no evidence of slowing computer performance. Industry
reports on MSE have been very favorable.

I recently replaced my Avast! AV, and Zone Alarm firewall with MSE and
Windows firewall and have been quite pleased with their ease of use and low
resource requirements. So far the protection has been 100% on my XP IE8 Sp3
machine. I do a manual check with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware about
once a month just to be safe but they generally find nothing.

1) Physical memory is 512 MB.
2) IObit Security runs in the background. It consumes a small amount of VM
as compared to Windows Defender, so it does not bother me.
3) I uninstalled and then reinstalled IObit Security and didn't feel any
difference.
4) The most noticeable slowing down of the computer performance, is when
Windows Automatic Update is downloading updates. Also, when Avast! is
actualizing its database. But I suppose that this is off topic.
Thank you,
Humpty

Well, dear bobster, that was a great bit of advise. After reading about it,
I uninstalled Avast, IObit, and Windows Defender, and installed Microsoft
Security Essential, It is so compact and slim! And it seems to do all the
work as needed.
Startup time of the computer went down to about half. Performance is already
much faster.
I stlill keep malwarebytes and spyware blaster to run once in a while.
Thank you again, here ends my question.
