Motherboard supports PC2700(DDR333)/ PC2100/(DDR266) memory. I want upgrade
memory and install 1GB stick.
Is there any advantages if to install PC3200 400mhz 1GB DDR NON-ECC CL3
(3-3-3) DIMM? (400MH is backward compatible)

Regards.

The advantage of installing PC3200 RAM into a PC2700/PC2100 motherboard is
similar to the advantage of putting size-10 shoes onto size-6 feet --
emotional value only.

If the memory cannot be run at DDR400 on the motherboard, then you
don't get a clear advantage from the PC3200 memory.

The CAS number changes with operating speed. If the memory is CAS3 at
DDR400, that is 3*5ns or 15 nanoseconds for CAS. If the memory is
run at DDR266, the clock (133MHz) in that case is 7.5ns, and 15/7.5 = CAS2.
So as the memory speed drops, the CAS can be a bit better. That
would be a tiny advantage I suppose. But you can just as easily
buy PC2100 CAS2 in that case. It could even be based on the same
kind of memory chips (comes off the same production line).

One thing you should know about 1GB DDR, is they sell a not very
useful kind of 1GB DDR DIMM on Ebay. So if you are thinking of
buying the memory on Ebay, buy a brand name stick of memory
somewhere else.

Notice the warning text in this example Ebay advertisement. This tells
you to stay away from the product.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Samsung-PC3200-...4QQihZ016QQcategoryZ74942QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

"128x4 High Density chips. (Our modules are tested to be compatible
to Motherbaords with chipsets VIA P4x266A, VIA KT400, VIA KT600,
VIA PT800, SIS 645, SIS648, SIS 648FX and SIS 746FX. NOT compatible
to all ASUS motherboards, Apples/Macs, laptops and boards with other
types of chipsets. Incompatible motherboards will recognize only a
portion, half or none of its 1gb capacity.)"

When you see that kind of warning "High Density", it is time to go to
your computer store and buy a good brand of memory. Branded memory uses
64Mx8 chips and not the 128Mx4 mentioned in the above advertisement.

This is an example of the proper kind of memory to buy. Notice in this
document, that they use 64Mx8 chips.

so, no any advantages, even minimal?

Thanks.

Nope, the only possible advantage may be price, IF a particular speed is
predominately available and the other is more rare.

You'd be lucky if the machine even booted, when you install RAM that
the motherboard doesn't support.

I doubt the machine would even boot.

It is absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the correct type of RAM needed:

Belarc Advisor

Unlimited Possibilities' AIDA32

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database
to help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model
computer and/or motherboard. (Incidentally, Crucial is the only company
from which I ever buy RAM. I've never been disappointed.)

Thank you for advice. Will use PC2700(DDR333) memory module.
