I have 3 256meg Ram chips , they all work, and I have 3 slots, which all
work, tested them all.
I had 512Meg and got another chip at 256Meg, I added it ...
BUT my computer only sees 512m of Ram , reguardless of what order I put
the Ram chips in..
Why can't my computer see the extra 256m of ram??
I am using windows XP home
Please help
thank you
Where are you seeing this information about only 512 mb of RAM? The
System Information utility in Windows XP is known to report incorrect
RAM amounts under some circumstances.
Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. At the bottom of
the Window it will show a figure for the amount of RAM detected by
Windows. If that says 768 mb then all is well and there is no need to
be concerned.
However if that also says 512 mb then there is a problem of some kind.
Watch the opening screens when the computer first starts up and see
what is reported by the system BIOS for RAM. You may have to go into
the BIOS setup to see this. If that says 768 mb then the hardware is
detecting all of the RAM. But if it says only 512 mb then there is a
hardware related issue and you need to consult the motherboard
manufacturer about this.
Assuming that the BIOS detects 768 mb and My Computer - Properties
only reports 512 mb the next step is to use Start - Run - MSCONFIG
Go to the BOOT.INI tab and click on the Advanced Options button. Make
certain that the checkbox for the /MAXMEM= line is clear and there is
no value in the data box for that line.
Good luck
