memory dump

D

Daniel Jenkins

I can't understand why my server (running Windows 2000) is dumping the total
contents of memory to a memory.dmp file. I can't open the file to see what
is happening. The size (190+ megs) of the file is equal to the total
physical memory size. I'm not having other problems with it.

Help please!

Thanks in advance.

The memory dump occurs when the server crashes. You can change that so it
reboots right away instead of wasting time transfering the contents of the
RAM to the HDD. Microsoft has tools for analyzing the DMP files (they
actually come with the server editions of Windows - I believe in the folder
called Admin on the CD). They may come in handy when you're trying to
figure out why the server crashed.

Ditto what Jack said,

....also go into System Control Panel\Advanced\
Startup and Recovery and change "Write Debuggin Info" to
"Small Memory Dump -- 64K" until you have need of the full
one and will use it. (Win2000)

On NT, you can only enable and disable the full dump however.

One more thing, you really want to remove whatever driver,
service or other problem is causing this rather than just hide
the results...

Are Blue Screens a good or bad thing? Good thing!

They help you to repair the problem that CAUSES the blue screen
and crash.
