Memory, DRAM, FSB etc. question??

Frank P.

Intel e6600 cpu
ASUS P5QL-SE mb
(Intel P43 chipset, "support memory 1066 MHz")
3 Gb A-Data DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) RAM.

CPU-Z and SIW report DRAM Freq. 333.3 MHz.

I don't think I'll ever understand this stuff, but shouldn't the DRAM
freq. be 400 MHz instead of 333.3 MHz?

TIA.

Go in and set it manually. I have had a few different
motherboards, that ran the RAM at the wrong setting. It
only takes a few minutes to set them up right.

AI Overclocking [Manual]

DRAM Frequency [800MHz]

Configure DRAM Timing via SPD [Disabled]

(then, enter the timing values for the memory product
manually. You can use CPUZ now, to find out the
correct values from the SPD table, and then use that
info to set the values in the BIOS. I can't see a page
in the manual, that describes where you load Tcas, Trcd, Trp
and so on, so you'll have to look at the screen after
selecting the ...SPD [Disabled] thing.

The reason for setting it manually, is to encourage
the BIOS to do the right thing.

Thanks. One problem solved. It's running at the intended frequency
now.
I'll have a look at the Tcas, Trcd, Trp etc. settings later. It looks
like the RAM modules require different settings, which is strange,
since they are of the same make and type. The only difference is the
size (One 1 Gb and one 2 Gb module).

You use the slower of the two settings. A slower setting works with
a faster module. You have one module 5.0-5-5-18 and the other
module 6.0-6-6-18, so you'll be setting the BIOS to run both of
them at 6.0-6-6-18.

Modules come with all sorts of different timings, so it should be
no surprise that two different models of memory come with different
timings. All you have to do, is select the slower timings, so both
remain stable.

If you're still using effectively "Auto" for Tcas, Trcd, Trp etc,
then the BIOS should already have chosen 6-6-6-18 for you as
the operating mode. The BIOS knows it is supposed to use the
slowest of the settings.

I let the BIOS select the settings ("based on the SPD table") and it
chose 5.0-5-5-15. The system is running stably, so I'll keep these
settings.
Thanks for the feed-back.
