after being connected to the internet for around five
minutes it will no longer load any new pages up and then
disconnects from msn messenger and the internet shortly
after. the only way to get back on the internet is to
restart the computer. i rang up my internet provider to
see if they could help and they said it was a problem that
windows xp has with memory allocation and to speak to
someone who knows about these things. unfortunately no one
ive spoken to knows about this problem. i usually run
internet explorer msn messenger and windows media player
at the same time. running fewer programs usually prolongs
the time before cut off but does not stop me bein
disconnected. please help!

XP doesn't have such a problem.
When the problem reoccurs, open the task manager.
MAke sure the columns "mem usage" and "VM size" are visible
on the process tab. If they're not add them by using VIEW/
ADD COLUMNS.
Now you can find out who is using all the memory, and whether it's
enough to be causing system problems.

For general health of the system, memory wise,
select the "performance tab" and look at "commit charge"
(lower left) If "Total" is very close to "limit"
XP is having to juggle things around quite a bit,
but even then, XP does a good job, in my experience.

My guess is you have some kind of connection problem
and you should look in the event viewer (eventvwr.msc
from the RUN box) and click on system, security and
application to see if any messages were generated that might be
related.
Also run a malware scan using ad-aware and spybot search and destroy.
Of course, it goes without saying you should also do a complete scan
for virus'
