Failure to disconnect from MSN

Oh, please, somebody help me. About 25% of the time when I sign off on
MSN (dial up connection), the MSN voice says "goodbye" but the computer
stays connected to MSN. I have to unplug the phone cord to disconnect.
MSN has tried to help, with no success. They have had me adjusting the
modem, Internet Explorer, MSN sign in section.

I'm running Windows XP, 56K modem. Running MSN 9.2, Internet Explorer
7.0, MSN Messenger 7.0.

This problem has been happening for quite awhile but the frequency of
failure to disconnect has been getting worse lately. I think it's not a
modem problem but something wrong with MSN/Internet explorer.

Anybody out there had the same problem? If so, lemme know how to fix.

Thanks for any help you can give.

What is the virus/malware status of the computer? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

Problems with Internet connectivity, failure to shutdown, failure to
disconnect, etc. are most often caused by malware.

If malware isn't the problem. Shutdown any programs that use the internet,
like a dial-up accelerator or download manager. This worked for me.
