Is the procedure in making a W2K server a member server
just going to <My Computer - Network Identification -
Properties then, type where it says member of "the domain
name"?

Thanks in advance

Just simply build a Windows 2000 server and add it to the domain. Do not run
the DCPromo executable.

What does the dcpromo do? Does that stand for domain
controller promotion? If so, I just want my w2k server up
as a member server.

Thanks

Yes, if you want a member server, just do what you first
said:
"My Computer - Network Identification - Properties then,
type where it says member of "the domain name"?"

You'll be asked for an account with permissions to join
it to the domain.

If you wanted a Domain Controller, you would run DCPROMO
instead.

.
In this case simply install WIN2000 Server and join it to
the existing domain. This will make it a Member Server.
You are done...

Now, DCPromo is the process which - should you want to
make a Member Server a Domain Controller - "promotes" that
Member Server to a Domain Controller. You can either join
and existing AD Domain by making that particular server
the second or third or whatever the case might be DC in
that Domain or you can create a Child Domain or whatever.

Furthermore, if you have a current DC that - for whatever
reason you no longer want to function as a DC - needs to
be demoted to a simple Member Server you would run DCPromo
on it. Just make sure that you transfer ( very
important...transfer and NOT seize ) any of the FSMO roles
that this to-be-demoted DC might hold to another DC and
when the process iscompleted you have yourself a Member
Server...Just make sure to clean things up abit..

HTH,

Cary
