media player won't read track/artist info from CDs

Media player v9. When I copy a CD to media player,
everything comes up 'unknown'. It will not read any of
the track/artist/album information.

same cds that have an autostart, DVD video on them, or burned can cause that

store bought music cd?

Are you connected to the internet? Do you have disc metadata download
enabled on tools/options/privacy?

There is almost no metadata stored on the disc itself (except CDtext in a
few cases, like Sony, which few if any media players currently read).
