Media Player uses 90% CPU Time

Hi!
My Media player (6.4 and 9) use 90% of the CPU time
when playing any media file. It was not always like this
but started behaving like this only 2 days ago. Even other
media software like winamp take this much CPU usage.

Did something change? Do the players take up that much CPU time when not
playing something? Does this happen for audio-only files? If so, this may
be some change in your sound card...

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I am not sure of any change in
my settings. I recently installed Win 2000 SP4. This case
is not limited to audio files but anything I play in Media
Player. Real Player user about 47% of CPU time. When the
file stops playing file the CPU usage drops down to zero.
It is also impossible to play any streaming audio or video
on my broadband connection due to this problem.

Please help

Moses

Okay, if it's happening with audio-only files... does it happen for
mplay32.exe as well, and sndrec32.exe (or sndrec.exe - I don't recall the
exact name)?

Just curious as to how isolated this is...

I did the test on mplay32 and sndrec32. While playing a
mp3 file on mplay32 CPU usage was 100% as is the case
WMP9. But while playing a WAV file on sndrec32 CPU usage
was a mere 11%. The same WAV file test conducted on
mplayer.exe and WMP9 used more than 90% of CPU usage.
Any ideas what happening. Or do I just have to format my
system and reinstall the OS. :-(

Moses

Given that, I'd suspect the error is in your sound card, and that your
efforts would be best spent trouble-shooting that.
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#dsound
is a little WMP-centric, but may help. Heck, even
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#chipmunks
may help.

Hi :)
I went to
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#audio and
checked the playback device. The playback device ("Control
Panel"-->"Multimedia"-->"Audio") was set as 'Total
Recorder' which I had installed long ago. I changed it
back to the default soundcard option and hey I'm back in
bussiness. My CPU usage fell to 5% :).
But i still have no idea how it was changed to "total
recorder' Anyway all's well that ends well.
Thanks a ton. If not for you I would have reinstalled
windows.

Thanks and have a great day.
