Media in drive has changed

I'm using Vista Home Premium. I started getting the following error
recently. This used to work fine. The only change I can think of recently
is that I am now using a 1GB ReadyBoost USB flash drive as an experiment.
I'm trying to copy pictures from an SD card to my computer using Windows
Explorer. I usually use the Nikon photo downloader with a USB card reader
but it is not working right either - probably because of this issue. I've
tried two different ones and get the same issue. When copying using either
one, the copy goes for a while then locks up for about a minute then I get
this error when using Windows Explorer. With the Nikon downloader, I just
get a general error message. In either case, I click on OK and the copy
appears to continue with no problem. This can happen several times when
copying from a card so it results in taking many minutes to copy all the
files. I found one other reference to this error message but not useful
responses.

An unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make a note of this error
code, which might be useful if you get additional help to resolve this
problem. Error 0x80070456: The file in the drive may have changed.

Sorry. I copied the error message incorrectly. It is actually "The media in
the drive may have changed" and I would not depend on the error number either.

I searched the Internet and found no solution. I found other instances
where people are having the same error condition, but none of them found a
solution either. The following is the best description I found:

Returns S_OK if the method is successful, otherwise an error code .
E_NO_INTERFACE ... E_MEDIA_CHANGED 0x80070456 Disk error. E_NO_MEDIA_IN_DRIVE
0x80070458 Disk error.

Other people discussing this problem say that this problem doesn't occur in
WinXP, for them, but only occurs in Vista.

I have no solution. Download and install all the updates available on the
Microsoft update site. You might get lucky and install a fix, but don't hold
your breath. I suppose this will get fixed in time. Keep in mind that this
situation doesn't happen to everyone. Some people have it and some people
don't.

Be sure the button that you press to make the card "secure" is not in the
secure position. Also, since you feel this issue began after installing the
USB flash drive, have you tried running without it to see if you can then
copy the files?

If the write lock was in the wrong position, I could not use the card at all
but I can write to it using it in the camera. I removed the USB drive that I
was using to test ReadyBoost but that had no effect. Another thing I
noticed, Windows Explorer is also locked up during the period when the card
is not being read. I tried writing a lot of data to the card and there are
periods where the writing stops for a long time but I see no error messages -
it just starts up again on its own. I checked the ReadyBoost options for the
drive the card is using and the option to not test the drive is checked but
every time I look at this the last time is was checked was when I put the
card in. Is there a way to disable ReadyBoost completely so I can if this is
the problem?

I tried hooking my camera up to the same USB port and downloading the
pictures. There are no errors and the files are copied at a slow but steady
2.33 MB/s with no slowdowns or anything. Maybe this is because Windows knows
it can't use this device as a ReadyBoost device?

To turn ReadyBoost on or off for a specific device:

Plug the device into your computer; this should automatically open AutoPlay.
Under General Options, click "Speed up my computer."
This well display the properties dialog box for your device.
Click the ReadyBoost tab and to turn ReadyBoost off, click "Do not use this
device." To turn it back on, do the above but click "Use this device."

What brand and size of card are you using? Kingston recommends upgrading
the firmware of your device, camera, reader/writer, etc. if you receive this
type of error.

It says it is a DTR/1GB. I looked on Kingston's web site and could not find
anything. This device is not in their list of products and without choosing
a product first, I don't seem to be able find anything about firmware
updates. I tried google and it did not turn up anything either. Where did
you see this?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner or I would have posted a response earlier.
The information I provided was from Vista Help. I opened Help
and Support on the Start Menu, I used Ready Boost as the search term in Help
and the information was provided in the first listed topic "How to turn
Ready Boost on or off."

Correction, the topic reads "Turn Ready Boost on or off for a storage
device."
