Mechwarrior IV games just don't work now

I've had a bumpy experiance with the Mechwarrior IV games. But a few months
ago it was all going well. The games don't work now.
The problem is that when I launch a game le's go with Mechwarrior IV
Mercenaries as it's installed a the moment. It will launch then gibe me an
error message and also has an option (tickbox) to try and restart the
application. Ticking or unticking the box makes not a lot of difference as it
may launch the game or just give me an error saying "Not in main thread" and
go away. If it does launch it will give me the license agreement and launch.
Then when you actually try to play, say go into an instant action or try to
play the campaign. It will crash and give me the error not in main thread.
Looking at the event viewer. It is saying stuff about a missing .dll file.
This doesn't seem right as there wasn't much difference between my PC now
than a few months ago.
Attempting to resolve this. I've tried to get them to run with compatibility
modes. That wasn't very successful. I've also tried the compatability
toolkit, but realised I don't really know what I'm doing with that. So it's
slow progress.
All I'm asking is if anyone can help me out with this problem.

Hi Supamunky,

What did you install on your system between the time the game worked and now?
Did you install any driver updates?

What is the exact error message you first receive before the "option (tickbox)"?

One thing you could try is reinstalling the game. First, find the saved
games and put them where you can find them - maybe the desktop. After you
reinstall the game, move the saved games back to where they were in the
previous game folder.

I don't have any save games. I sorta lost them... Well mislaid them, when
drunk maybe.

The drivers for the graphics card (Geforce 4), Chipset drivers (VIA) and
Sound Card (Sound Blaster Audigy LS). Plus there's the Windows updates over
the months.
The error message I get that contains the tick box is just the standard
MechWarrior Mercenaries has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconveniance. Then the usual error message with the tick box
for Recover my work and restart Mechwarrior and the send error report.
The other error message seemed more interesting really.
I can send a copy of it, if you want?

Hi Supamunky,

Go ahead and reinstall the game as suggested.
Those driver updates may have changed some of the parameters
which the .ini files for the game are dependant upon.

Alright, I've finally had a chance to reinstall Mechwarrior and it still
doen't work.
I'm gonna go with my old plan of reinstalling Windows 98 on an IDE drive
along with the new Ubuntu on a separate partition so I have no hassle with
the boot.ini. I think that'd work out pretty well really.

Hi Supamunky,

That's the best solution for folks savvy enough to impliment it. :)
