Meaning of 'Char' designation in Style Name?

Keith,

As differenct from a Paragraph Style, Character styles
only affect font attributes (e.g., bold, italic, etc.).
It sounds like you have your options (probably under
Tools>Edit but I am not at a Word2002 machine to verify)
set to keep track of formatting. This causes Word to
create new style definitions based on your directly
applied formatting. Meaning if you apply a bacic Heading
Style and then bold it, Word will create a new Heading
style will bold character formatting.

Greg,

Thanks for your help. My Tool/options/edit/keep track of formatting button
is NOT selected. Any idea how I can prevent Word from adding all of these
'Char' styles to my document?

Thanks,

Keith

Applying SP1 is supposed to cut down on this, but the main thing to be aware
of is that a Char style is created whenever you apply a paragraph style to
selected text. Before applying a style (unless you intend to apply it to
just a portion of a paragraph), make sure your selection is either a single
point or the entire paragraph.
