McAfee VirusScan disables and enables randomly

The Recent Events log in McAfee shows that real time virus protection was
disabled on October 6 at 4:15 p. m. and was not enabled until October 7, 8:52
a. m. Then it was disabled the same day at 10:18 a. m. and enabled again at
10:55 a. m. Almost always when I activate the computer I get a message that
virus protection is turned off, but by the time I follow up by opening
Security Center it has been enabled again.

When I bought the computer there was some Microsoft Virus software installed
but not activated. I thought I uninstalled it, but McAfee believes it is
causing my problem. How do I get rid of this?

I have XP with Media Center, purchased in March this year.

Who manufactured the system ? Perhaps contacting them would reveal the
name of this " Microsoft Virus software " so that someone can assist you
with the McAfee issue.

Temporarily disable McAfee's resident protection and then have the
system scanned by Kaspersky's Online Scanner -
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

At least you'll know if there is malware resident or not.
After the scan is done, reenable McAfee.
If anything untowards is detected by the Kaspersky scan post the info
into your reply along with the name of the mysterious virus software,
please.

My problem seems to be that I have two Anti-Virus programs on my computer
interfering with each other and your recommendation is that I add another
anti-virus program which will add hidden files to my system. I'm not an
expert at this at all, but it seems clear that that will just gum things up
even more and uninstalling the unwanted Anti-Virus software will be even more
difficult. I'm not taking that route.
I believe I need direction on how to wipe the Microsoft Anti-Virus software
out of my machine, so the A-V program I paid for can work.

If you read Mow's instructions more carefully, you would have seen that
he was *not* suggesting that you install another antivirus. He
suggested that you do an online scan.

There is no way that anyone reading your posts knows what you have
installed. Look in Add/Remove Programs and uninstall whatever you are
calling "Microsoft Anti-Virus". There is no such thing, btw. There is
MS One Care, but I haven't seen this preinstalled on any OEM machines.

A good alternative for you might be to consider taking the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA). Someone who knows what they are doing and can do a
hands-on diagnosis of the machine will be able to figure out the
problems fairly quickly.
