A couple of months ago, I installed some critical
updates. Norton Anti Virus (NAV) began failing soon
after. NAV was configured so that Auto Protect would run
on log in. However, after about 15 seconds, Auto Protect
would swith to a "disabled" status. I could manually turn
Auto Protect on using the Norton control panel, but it
would turn of withing 15 seconds. I could start Auto
Protect from Services and set the startup option to
automatic and the same thing would happen. Followning
Symantecs advice to uninstall, clean boot, and reinstall
did not fix the problem.

So I downloaded McAfee VirusScan and installed it and it
is doing the same thing.

This leads me to think that the problem is with XP and not
either of the anti virus programs. Has anyone heard of
this problem before? Any suggestions?

TIA,

Mike

Sounds like you have a virus ..... Try the online virus
checker at

Been there, done that. Use both Symantec and McAfees
online checker. As well as a full scan by AVG Anti
Virus. Computer is virus free.

Interesting enought, AVG Anti Virus runs in auto mode
without any problems. Even did some custom tests with the
EICAR string and it was detected.

You have a virus. Go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and download Stinger
which knows about 30 of the latest ones. It will find it for you and get rid
of it if it is one of those ones.
