McAfee v8 updating - a warning

With a special note to David Lipman (who kindly responded to a previous
query of mine on this subject)

This is a word of warning if anything to anyone considering updating to v 8
of Viruscan - that is if you prefer to download the DAT files to install
manually and then save for possible future use, as I do/did.

Having updated to v 8 myself, I found that the SUPERDAT files no longer
installed. David Lipman suggested, amongst other things, to await the
release of the new engine and see if the installer was updated to recognise
version 8. Well it wasn't, and it doesn't.

McAfee's only response is to advise using auto-update or the inbuilt
updating process. Which means they are preventing customers from saving the
superdat files. Which means I now have to look into an alternative product.

The sdat files available here can be extracted by running them from a DOS
box, using the /e switch:
http://www.nai.com/us/downloads/updates/superdat.asp
You can then do command line scanning without McAfee Virusscan even being
installed, using only the files contained in the sdat update, so maybe
extracting this way would be worth trying for the situation you describe?

You didn't wait long enough !

The latest SuperDAT that would contain ENGINE v4320 and the latest DAT has NOT been posted
yet. Supposedly the update will be posted this coming Wednesday.

Hi Shane - not sure I understand.

Part of the reason that the superdat files won't install in version 8 is
that the directory structure has been changed.

So what happens when you run the files you pointed to with the /e switch? Do
they uninstall into the same folder that the file has been downloaded into?

I do want to end up with Viruscan loading at start-up and be running in the
background.

I understand from David Lipman that I can download zip versions of the
superdat files and install them manually, but as yet I can't find a zip
version of the new engine file (4320).

Yes, well I was under the erroneous impression that contained the latest
scan engine.

Yes.

Yes. Well my suggestion was meant more as a way to at least use McAfee
Virusscan from DOS (ie I didn't really expect it would cure the problem). So
you could continue being able to scan without having to switch products in
the meantime while awaiting a proper fix from McAfee.

Well here apparently is the exe:
http://a64.g.akamai.net/7/64/2015/2...censed/superdat/engine/intel/4320/4320eng.exe
but you probably know this by now.

I'm running V8 but I do not understand about "superdat" . What is
this and how does it differ from what I'm running?

McAfee calls signature files, DAT files.

The SuperDAT is an executable either which contains only the DAT files or the DAT files and
the ENGINE files.

By executing the SuperDAT you can update the DAT and/or DAT and ENGINE of your McAfee
software.

You can though manually update the definition files by downloading the
43**xdat.zip file and copying the clean, scan and names.dat files into the
relevant folder.

this is how you can copy the daily dat files as well.

I'm totally confused! My version 8 does this automatically i.e. by
itself. Why would I want to manually download anything?
