Can't install DAT files

M

Me

Hiya

I just updated McAfee Viruscan to version 8 (allowed it to uninstall version
7 first).

In the past I've always dowloaded the DAT files to keep uptodate, rather
than letting it update itself.

However, having just downloaded the latest DAT file, when I try installing
it I get a message "Unable to read from the registry".

I then tried a manual update from within Viruscan, and that worked and
instaled the latest DAT file. But I want to carry on downloading and saving
the files myself before updating.

Does anyone have any idea what's happening or what I can do please?

But please don't bother with the "McAfee is crapware" type stuff - I've used
it for years without problems thankyou.

Considering that they were released on wed. and Today is Friday - I REPEAT my simple
question...

Which type DAT files ?

4317XDAT ?
SuperDAT ?
ZIP ?

Dave

| Sorry, 4317 is what I tried

So you executed the XDAT and you got "Unable to read from the registry".

The present SuperDAT manager is v1.7. I wonder if the v1.7 SuperDAT Manager recognizes
McAfee Retail v8.x.

During the first week of February the v4320 ENGINE will be distributed via the SuperDAT with
the v4319 DAT files (assuming nothing goes 'hot' in the next two weeks.) I am wondering if
SuperDAT manager v1.8 will be used with this new ENGINE and DAT. If that's true, wait until
that happens and try again. In the mean time let the client go to the FTP site or download
the ZIP file and manually extract the DAT files to the NAI ENGINE directory. You will have
to shut the software down before extracting the files.

Dave

| Sorry again David, misread your question - it was the 4317xDAT

Thanks David - for now I have allowed Viruscan to update itself manually, to
make sure I am up-to-date. Have also located the zip file you mentioned, at
www.nai.com/us/downloads/updates/dat.asp and will try from there when
4318 is released.

I'll also try the combined new engine and 4319 file when that is released -
if it still doesn't work, any ideas where I would get a zipped version
from - I ask because there is no sign of engine files at the website
mentioned above.

Many thanks for your time

David, sorry to keep being such a pain - but the link you just gave for the
engine files only shows the Superdat .exe version - is there anywhere to get
engines in a zip file? Or did I miss something?

No - sorry if I misunderstood.

Oh well, I'll just have to wait and see if the new engine has a manager that
I can use. I have also emailed McAfee for comment, but I won't hold my
breath!
