Maxtor 6Y00P0 Harddrive

Dan Martin

I have a new Maxtor 200 gig harddrive and am running XP
with all the updates and the bios recognizes the drive as
the slave, I can partition it and format it but everytime
I boot the machine the little bubble in the bottom right
corner lists the Maxtor drive and the " Cannot install
This Hardware" box appears and says "There was a problem
installing this hardware ( and it lists the drive)An
error occured and a specific service does not exist for
this device. In the Device Manager there is an
Exclamation point on the Maxtor Drive ( not on my Western
Digital)and when I try and use the update driver option
it displays the same message. Ive copied files to the
Maxtor and all that but I get this hardware message each
and everytime I boot the machine,,,,like there is no
driver installed and Harddrives get the drivers from XP
right? There are no solutions on the Maxtor web site or
the Microsoft web site. Maxtor is stumped and they even
send me a new drive to eliminate the possiblity of a bad
drive. New dirve does the same thing,,,I installed the
drive in a totally differnt computer with XP and it does
the same thing. >??> Any and all suggestions would be
appreaciated...
Thanks ( Please e:mail me if you have a quick solution)

Whenever you have boting problems, you should also post
your motherboad info. Try contacting your motherboad
manufacturer for support on related issues. ou may need
to update the bios to recognise the newer, larger drives.
Secondly I assume Maxtor asked about your firmware
version on the drive...double check it

You did install Maxtor's driver from their CD, right? I have the 160YP0 and
have no problems. You could try reinstalling the driver. I would also
recommend uninstalling the driver from the Device Manager to make sure
nothing is bound to that device.

Hi, Dan!
Here is from the Maxtor site Knowledge Base:

"If your drive is connected to the motherboard's ATA bus and is larger
than 137 GB, you must use MaxBlast 3 bootable CD or floppy versions to
partition and format the drive from the advanced partitioning options.
You may need to enter the system's BIOS and change the boot order or
boot sequence before the system will allow you to boot to a CD.
....
Note: After succesfully installing Windows, users who have drives
larger thank 137 GB will need to install the latest XP
Service Pack from Microsoft and install the Maxtor Big Drive Enabler
<http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/big_drive_enabler.htm>.
Failure to install SP 1 for XP or SP 3 for 2000 and the Big Drive
Enabler will cause data loss when accessing the drive beyond 137 GB. "
