maximum rules

Is there a way to increase the maximum number of rules in outlook when using
exchange?

No. It's limited because all of the info in the rules have to fit within a
RPC call (which is limited to 32KB).

Ben,

How many rules would it take to use 32KB if each rule is a simple "move to"
based on subjet line content?

Thank you,

Tony

Hard to say - a simple "move to" rule will probably be 700 bytes or so, so I
guess you could get maybe 45 or so rules in there?

Rule size will be affected by how long the subject line criteria is (i.e.
matching on "Hi" will take a lot less space than matching on "Get rich by
helping me get money out of the Congo") and also folder name size.

Whenever possible try to combine multiple rules into a single rule to save
space.

Ben,

Than this IS an issue for our company. 45 rules is nothing. Will the new
version of Outlook allow for more rules?

Thank you,

Tony

It's not an Outlook limitation per se, it's an RPC limitation. So the
answer to your question is almost certainly "no." I haven't tried to create
that many rules in Outlook 2007 though.

If you really need THAT many rules you might look into writing some of those
functions as VBA macros/scripts instead. Not subject to the same
limitations and probably more efficient (though somewhat harder to
create/edit/maintain).

Sue Mosher has a couple of excellent Outlook Programming books that you
could probably find at your local Borders or Barnes & Noble if you were
interested.

Ben,

I've turned off everything, rewritten everything and all I can trace this
issue back to is MSFT's Outlook Security and Junk Mail Updates.

Do you think that MSFT will have a fix for this soon. It seems that alot of
people all over the boards are taking about all their e-mail going into their
JUNK MAIL folders and their rules nor playing by the rules <gg>

Best regards - going nuts with my email now.

No, I don't think Microsoft is likely to change the maximum number of rules
soon -- as below it's a much more complicated issue than it would seem on
the surface. It's not an arbitrary limitation.

As for issues with the junk e-mail, yes I've seen a number of people
complaining about the junk filters going somewhat haywire. For those people
I'm afraid the best I can recommend is to turn off the junk filters and get
SpamBayes or something similar.
