maximizing speed and memory- renewed

Hi all,
I was wondering if there was anyway for me to maximize the speed and memory
on my comp. I have an AMD Athlon 900 mhz processor and 384 mb of PC 133 RAM.
I am not interested in buying any new processors or sticks of RAM just yet,
and I would like to make my processors work faster. I have turned off many of
the fancy features of Windows XP Pro, which helped a great deal, but even
still, I know people with only 1.2 or 1.4 ghz (something really close, no
more than 1.4 GHz) processors which is not much more than mine but they have
ALL the features of XP Pro turned on and theres is working extremely fine.
They even have the same RAM as me. They have 4 or 5 games loaded on their
comp. that use A LOT OF the speed, (Age of Mythology- The Titans and the
original, Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Zoo Tycoon). I have used their computers and
found that they are EXTREMELY fast, but then I come home to mine and find
that when I go to load or exit a game, my computer gets extremely slow and I
cant click anything for 1 or 2 minutes, and I even have some of the same
games (Age of Mythology, Diablo 2) Basically, what I'm asking if you haven't
already figured it out completely, is how do I get my computer working just
as fast, or almost as fast as my firends computer without putting a new
processor in? And remeber that it shouldn't be much slower than his because
its only 300 mhz difference in processor.
-----------------------------------------
Thnx to all that helped me before. I'm renewing htis topic because:
a)I believe it's useful to other people as well as;
b)I am finding this useful myself. It's helping me more and more as I go

Just one more thing that I would like to ask as well. I have my comp on all
the time, but there are 4 users. I would like to set my comp up to do disk
defrag and cleanup and all those other things at night, but thats when my
comp is in screensaver mode and the users are logged off. Is there anyway I
can still set the comp. up to do it automatically instead of leaving
erminders to everyone to leave the comp logged on if your the last one on it.
As I said, this info is not just useful to me but I believe that other people
reading this will beneift from the answers. Theres nothing better than a fast
comp.

Try running Ad-Aware SE Personal to get rid of the spyware.

I recommend Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D. (safer networking).
Also look into you Start menu/Startup folder and delete any
shortcuts to programs which may not be required to run (such
as fas startup to budget manager, pdf readers, etc). Helps
security & performance.

Create an admin account or use yours but it must have a password.

Schedule the tasks you want and set to use that account. Noone needs to be logged in. If someone is logged in they won't see the tasks running unless they are the same user who scheduled the task..

You need to schedule defrag.exe not the pretty defrag in the list (the list is just what is on the Start menu). So Create any task, then edit the Properties to
defrag c:

The pretty defrag needs a user to click Defrag so can't be scheduled.

Disk Cleanup.

Do same procedure as above but use

cleanmgr /sagerun:1

But before running it type in Start Run

cleanmgr /sageset:1

This sets the options for the scheduled task.

so, what you mean by "Do same procedure as above but use" is that for all of
them i type the name of the program such as defrag, disk cleanup, then .exe?
I get how to do the defrag part but when you put this "Do same procedure as
above but use", I got confused with the rest.

That is create a task, any task, and edit the properties, one with defrag c: and one with cleanmgr /sagerun:1.

As you can't choose them in the wizard and have them work.
The .exe is optional but is good practise to do so.

ok. I got to the edit properties part but then im lost. go detailed after
that. thnx.

Click Add Scheduled Task
Click Next in the wizard
Choose anything on the list andf click Next
Finish the wizard with times etc.
Use an Admin account with password.
Right click the new task and choose properties
In the Run box on the Task page enter

defrag.exe c:

Click ok

Right click the task again and choose Rename and name it somthing sensible (like defrag)

Repeat above steps including Add Scheduled Task but type

cleanmgr.exe /sagerun:1

instead of defrag.exe c:, and rename it to Disk Cleanup instead of defrag.

Then type in Start Run
cleanmgr /sageset:1

and set which options you want Disk Cleanup to do when task scheduler runs it.

To see what happens click the Advanced menu, then Stop Using Task Scheduler, then click Advanced again, then View Log. Remember to turn on TS after viewing the log. You may be able to view the log without stopping Task Scheduler .

You may want to schedule Cleanmgr an hour before defrag.
