Max IDE Drive Size supported

G

Guest

I have a Windows 2000 server running in a HP D530 computer for
emergencies I purchased a couple of WD 300gb IDE Drives and this
computer only sees 128gb, I know it is not the hardware because
I have the same HP D530 running WinXP and it sees the full 300gb.

What is the Max Hard drive size supported by windows using IDE drives,
is there a fix or registry entry that will let Windows 2000 see the 300gb.

I m running windows 2000 std edition.

Thanks
Xavier

After the install you can apply the reghack in this article.

Help Please,

I did the recommended changes to the registry as suggested in the
article to enable 48bit LBA, went to disk management and there was the
unused partition above the 137 GB barrier. I formatted as a primary
partition, all was OK but it wouldn't show up in my computer. I went
back and changed the last partition to "active" and then made it a
logical drive. I could then see the last partition as my f: drive. I
had no problem with the intall or build before the change.

When I dropped the PC off at a friends today, it won't boot. It says
"Error loading OS". I checked the settings in the BIOS (which I had
not changed) and all looked OK. Still wouldn't boot. I inserted the
Win2000 and did a repair in the second repair window and still no boot.
Now though I am sure I have only bare Win2000 loaded and no service
paks. So the last partition won't be read until I reinstall the
service paks and modify the registry again.

How can I get it to boot? Was making the last 24gig partition in my
160gig drive a logical and "active" caused the problem. How can I do a
"fdisk" and delete the last partition and make the c: drive active. Is
that what I need to do?

Thanks
Tom

Assuming the system partition drive letter was C:\

You can start the recovery console and from a command prompt issue the
command;
fixboot C:
to repair/write the boot sector on C:\ and mark the partition as active.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

Or boot a win98 startup disk, run fdisk and mark the correct partition as
active.

Ok, I inserted the Win2000 CD and then "enter" at the "Welcome to
setup", then F8, then r for repair, it says "Setup has already
attempted to upgrade te following windows installation. Setup wil try
to complete the upgrade again. I don't think this is what you
mentioned in the above instructions. Now it is doing a reinstall.
Where do I get a chance to get to the recovery console? I didn't see
that available in any of the menus? I really really don't want to do a
complete reinstall. It took me a week to get a computer key number for
some expensive seismic mapping software. If I do a complete install, I
will have to get another computer software key.

Ok it rebooted and I still get the "Error loading OS" message. How can
I get to the recovery console. Do I hit "R" in the first screen before
it looks for the previous install?

Thanks
Tom

There is no F8 when booting the CD-Rom. If you can't boot the CD-Rom then
try the setup disks.

Ok,
I generated the boot disks waited a long time for them to run, then I
got the same as above. Enter, then repair, no recovery console
message. Just setup has lready attempted to upgrade the follwoing
windows installation. Two options 1. retry upgrading, 2. quit

Where can I find the recovery console?

Me thinks you missed a step. Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen.
Press R to repair a Windows 2000 installation, and then press C to use the
Recovery Console.

I thought I saw in a post somewhere, that Win2000 CD with SP2 doesn't
install recovery console. I am looking some more for the reference.

Man this is annoying.

Dave Patrick

It's another subject to install the recovery console as a startup option but
not the issue here.

OK,
Maybe I don't get it, but I have only been working on PCs for 13 years.
I never see a "Setup Notification" screen. Is that the screen that
you end up at after all the drivers and such are loaded? That screen
says "Windows 2000 Professional Setup". I then hit enter, it examines
the disk and wants me to hit F8 to agree to the license agreement. It
shows the previous installation on the c: drive. I hit R for repair.
The next screen gives two options 1. Try upgrading to win2000 and 2.
quit. No recovery console. What am I missing and when do I get the
Setup Notification screen.

OK it should be at the "Welcome to Setup" screen press R to repair, and then
press C to start the Windows Recovery Console

I tried this and after F10 I was right in recovery console!

Description of the Windows 2000 Recovery Console Q229716

Starting the Windows Recovery Console
To start the Windows Recovery Console, use any of the following
methods: · Start your computer with the Windows Setup floppy disks,
or with the Windows CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press
F10, or press R to repair, and then press C (Windows 2000 only) to
start the Windows Recovery Console. Select the appropriate number for
the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then type the
administrator password. If the administrator password does not exist,
just press ENTER.

I rebooted after running fixboot c: and still get the Error Loading OS.
Should I try using a Win98 CD and fdisk to make the partition active
and delete the last partition that I created? Will win98 cd
recognized these big NTFS partions? I thought sure this would fix the
problem.

Yes, try the win98 startup disk and check to see what partition is marked as
active.

Ok,
I inserted the Win98 cd, ran fdisk, made the c: partition active and
rebooted. win2000 started up. Now I am finishing the repair setup I
shouldn't have tried earlier.

I think I only have to reinstall the video driver.

Thanks

Glad to hear it. You're welcome.

(be sure to get that "R" key fixed)
