Whatever NEVER!

Hi,

I have a multihomed network with approx. 20 servers. When I run
browstat on one of the servers, I get this result for ONE server.

Status for domain dom1 on transport

What's happening is that every once in a while we lose all
connectivity to our servers. There are 10 web servers. None of our
users can get any of the sites. And I can't even ping the IP's. But
after like 5 to 20 minutes, everything is fine.

One server has IsDomainMaster = TRUE and MaintainServerList = Yes -
Computer Browser service is started. There are no errors in the system
event logs. While all of the other servers are set to
IsDomainMaster=FALSE and MaintainServerList = No.

Can anyone tell me if the computer browser service can cause
networking to stop working?

Also ran a sniffer and noticed a lot of browser election traffic. Can
this be eliminated?

Thanks

This problem has nothing to do with Netbios browsing. Something is causing a physical network connectivity problem. If you
can provide details of the exact layout and configuration of the network, we may be able to provide a better solution.

When the problems occur, do you loose connectivity to machines on the same subnet or is it just to machines off subnet?

Thank you,

Hmmm:

"Master browser name is: W2K010
Master browser is running build 1381"

Build 1381 is NT 4.0 not Win2k. Are you running WINS on this network?

Actually, one of the servers is actually an NT4 server. No we are running
WINS. I double checked.

Hi Michael,

Can this problem be caused by having a server that is getting duplicate name
error?

I just finished checking all of the event logs and found one server that is
getting this message. I used nbtstat but everything is fine. The only thing
that is strange is that there's a entry called Administrator - which we
don't have. I've checked the newsgroups and found that it could be caused by
having more than 1 NIC. Now the server in question does have 2 NIC's.
However, only one of them is enabled. We are using WINS.
