Master Browser - PC wants to be

G

I have a Win2k domain controller. One of my windows 2000 pro desktops wants
to be the master browser everytime it is turned on. I have checked the
Subnet Mask on both the server and the desktop. They are both the same
255.255.255.0. What else can I check.

Thanks in advance

It doesn't really matter if a PC is the master browser. The main record your
concerned about is the Domain Master Broswer[1b] in WINS. This needs to be
the DC that holds the PDC emulator role. If you want to stop this PC from
being a master browser stop and disable the computer browser service on the
PC. Are you having browsing problems? The subnet mask has nothing to do with
it. Each subnet will elect thier own Segment Master Browser and then contact
the Domain MAster browser to keep and updated list of cross subnet browse
lists. If your on a single sunbet then this doesn't apply. So I guess the
real question is what is the problem your experiencing....

This machine will USUALLY be elected Master Browser.
(Although the DC that is the PDC Emulator will win on its
subnet.)

Fairly normal, any Windows machine can be Master Browser
for a domain-workgroup/subnet but the 'highest ranking'
machine should end up winning the election.

Subnet masks are practically irrelevant to such.
What else can I check.

First, is the machine IN the domain or workgroup with the same name?

Is it on the same subnet (as a higher ranking machine)?

Does it win OVER a higher ranking machine?

If the last is not true it's not a problem.

If you must you can reset "MaintainServerList" (I think I have the
name and spelling correct) to no so that it won't try to be a
Master Browser but that is seldom if ever necessary.
