Master Browser error in Event log

JOHNB

Hi,
I keep getting the following error logged in the
server system which is running Windows 2000 server. The
network machine which is causing this is the only one in
the company which is running Windows XP. It doesn't seem
to be causing any problems but I don't like error messages!

Any ideas on how to stop this??

Thanks

Johnb

Thanks Richard - like I said it isn't causing a problem
just annoying me - none of the other (2000pro) machines on
the network are doing this, only the XP.

There's really nothing to fix, this is a transparent process that Windows
carries out when computers are started or stopped on the network. Read more
about it here:

I have heard of XP Pro causing problems like that on a network in that it
thinks it should be the master browser. Try disabling the computer browser
service on the XP machine which will prevent it from maintaining the browse
list, but will still allow it browse the network. -- Steve

I disabled the master browser in Windows XP by editing
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\MaintainServerList"
to a value of "No" and
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\IsDomainMaster"
to "False". Also in Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services,
I disbled Computer Browser by setting it to Manual.

You can do a registry edit to prevent that computer from participating the
browsing process.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\
MaintainServerList - REG_SZ

Range: Yes, No, and Auto
Default: Auto
If this value is No, this server is not a browser.
