Master Browser Elections

Hello,

I'm running a mixed W2K/W2K3 domain. The main DC is W2K3, and we have a
mixture of W2K & XP desktops. Network login is via Novell NDS (Novell client
4.9) and then AD. DNS is serviced by a seperate Linux server.

My problem is that intermittantly an XP desktop will try to take over the
master browser role from the W2K3 dc. This then slows down logins on the
network to about 15 minutes. I force a re-election on the server and it
solves the problem for a short time.

I've tried disabling the browser service on a few PCs with no luck. I'm
running browstat on the W2K3 dc and it says it is the MB. I run it from a
workstation and it says the master name cannot be determined from the
GetAdaptorStutus.

I've gone into HKLM\system\ccs\services\browser\parameters and said TRUE to
'ismasterbrowser' on the DC and forced an election. No other PC has tried to
take over the role but logins are still dead slow on the PCs.

Can anyone help at all?

Many thanks to all.

the problem

Is there a reason that DNS is on a Linux server versus on one or more of the
AD DCs? The reason I ask is that I have an environment 95% similar to yours
(Novell NDS/Win2K3 AD) except that I have DNS on the domain and I have not
seen any cases of a client trying to usurp the master browser role.
