master and slave

Is it possible to install Windows XP on a slave disk ? I've a master with Windows2000 and I will install XP on my second disk. I boot from cd-rom and when the text-based portion is complete, the system reboots with the error message that "hal.dll" is missing or cannot be found. The file is there where it should be. Technet articles say that this could be due to an invalid boot.ini file, however, this file seems perfectly normal. When browsing the internet, I find indicators that it looks like you cannot install xp on a slave drive. Does somebody have a solution or an answer for my problem ? Many thanks in advance
Stef.

The most elegant solution to your problem is to use a third-party boot
manager such as XOSL (free!).

To help respondents solve your existing problem (if it is solvable!), you
should go a little further than saying that c:\boot.ini seems perfectly
reasonable, and actually post it here.

I would like to see that boot.ini. I would make sure that the rdisk part points to the second hard drive

Your problem is that you can't have 2 OS on the same partition. I know that much, but you need to become very familiar with the procedure to partition a disk. Too complicated for me to try to explain via a bulletin board. good luck!

Not quite. While you should never have two OSs on the same partition, there
is nothing that prevents you from doing it regardless. I have seen it quite
often.

Pegasus,

aren't there some problems with the installations sharing the
same folders for "Documents and Settings" and "Program Files"? I
think that's the root of the difficulties.

A particular problem could be that there are some
machine-dependent encryption keys somewhere in the All Users
folder.

You are entirely correct - this is the reason why you should
never install two MS OSs on the same partition. However,
this is not what James wrote. He wrote ". . . you can't have
2 OS on the same partition.". Well, you can, but you should
not.

Pegasus,

thanks, just wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything here.
