Master / slave drive

From original post............The slave drive is coming up as requires
formatting.

"When you added the drive did you jumper the original drive as Master and
the added drive as Slave? If not, do so and report back with the results."

My drives are set as follows.
Master (Western digital 40GB WD400)

** Jumper
**
**
**
**

Slave (Maxtor Diamond max plus 9 80GB)

**
*
**
** (tried jumper here, no change)
**

It states on slave hardrive no jumper=slave, tried this and no change, still
requires formatting.

For info the slave hardrive is from my old machine and should have info on
it (not urgent info)

My basic problem is trying to get the slave to work without formatting so I
can double check the info before I delete it, I want to use the slave as a
back up drive.

I am not 100% sure I understand how to set the jumpers.

Any help appreciated.

Most PCs, specifically older ones with IDE controllers, usually gave you
2. Each controller allowed 2 devices per cable. Total=4. Drives
or CD's, all the same.
The first one is either Master (single) or master. The terminology
changes from dealer to dealer. Master (single) is usually the only
drive where master is master with slave. Its even written that way too.
So you have to read between the lines.
The 2nd drive on the same cable is always a slave. I don't think you
ever have a slave with no master.

If you put 2 drives in and no CD's, you could put them each on a single
cable by themselves and thus they would both be master. The primary
controller becomes the primary master drive (C:) and the 2nd IDE
controller becomes D: drive.

I normally hook them this way, and then put like 2 CDs in, one on each
cable as slaves.

Hope this gets you going. But you have to know what the vendor wants
for each drive and if you mix vendors they don't have to be the same.
"A" could want a jumper for master, "B" could want no jumper for master.
You might have to pull the specs from their website if you have an issue.

Try jumpering the Maxtor Diamond Max as "Cable Select",
sometimes identified as "CS Enabled".

Ok I will try that.
Just another thought in case it means anything (not to me) when I go in to
properties for the slave drive it states file system as raw, does this mean
anything or just its not being recognised by PC because its not configures
properly.

What type of file system is the master hard drive?? It isn't FAT
trying to view a NTFS drive, is it???

Could be more than a Jumper setting problem.
After you try "cable select" does it still show as raw?

Have tried cable select and also master / slave settings.
Still getting raw file with 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free.

I could just try formatting but would have liked to double check any info on
the drive first.

Thanks for info I will try the free download to check it, it has been a
`slave` for 5 months and only just getting around to trying to sort it.
When I did the changeover I did transfer all before I made the move so I
don`t think anything of importance on it but wanted to double check.

Tell me what you think of EASEUS or any other utility
you try. Since you have everything backed up the drive
would now be a good drive to test some of the freeware
since you have nothing to lose.

Aside from jumper settings, its common knowledge that ide version WDs and
Maxtors simply don't get along. It has to do with the way they do low-level
communications at the ide level.

Running the EASUS demo and after half hour is showing

FAT folder parts 4560
Files identified 35087
total files found 140952

It has still got over an hour to run so there is lots on the drive.

Yes, it is side-stepping the normal timeout in accessing the drive. The
time-out was due to normal timing problems when WDs and Maxtor ide drives
are on the onboard ide of the PC. Not exactly what I would do, but it
appears to be working, slowly.

I decided to format the hardrive and it now appears to be working ok,
so if nothing else I now have my other back up in place.

Thanks to all for contributions.
