Drive controller, such as IDE, SCSI and SATA. Mass Storage generally
refers to disk drives.

A Software/Hardware inventory tool, Belarc Advisor will give you
details about your platform. Usually after a fresh install you need to
download and install the Chipset Driver pkg for your motherboard.
This installs the core or system level drivers.

Belarc Advisor download here:

Ok... got the Belarc Advisor... what to do now? What do I look for? I see
that I have a few controllers:

CONTROLLERS
Intel(R) 82801DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CA
Primary IDE Channel [Controller]
Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]

What do I do now?...

A "Mass storage controller" is a generic term applied to an unidentified
SCSI/RAID controller, no driver installed for it. It also applies to add-on
ide, scsi, or RAID cards. Not sure about SATA in this context though.
Check your bios setup for these except add-on cards. If enabled, disable
such. If an add-on card, either remove it, or find the driver for it.
