Mark an outlook folder to show is contains new mail

If new mail arrives it goes to the inbox. If I have rules setup the new mail
may go into one of many different folders. The problem I have is that I
don't know which folders have recieved new mail.

Many of these folders already have unread messages, and therefore I can't
rely on the folder name simply being bold.

help...

I thought I would draw a complete blank, however this reply - while not
exactly what was in my mind's eye - is really helpful and I have applied the
suggestion. Many thanks indeed for taking the time to add the reply.

I had the same question actually. dlw, great suggestion, and it definitely
helps. I was wondering though: is there a way to make the custom search
folder only show mail that I received today and not mail I sent today.? I get
emails sent to me and emails sent to my whole class (which is one group). So
selecting it to include only emails with my name in the sent "To:" line
doesn't work.

I'm not sure I follow. To clarify, I created the custom search folder that
was suggested as a solution to this topic, which again is:

file/new/search folder/custom/choose/criteria/time/received/today

This custom search folder produces emails that I received today as well as
emails that I sent today (which are in the "Sent Items" folder obviously). I
guess Outlook considers those emails received today because they were
received by the recipient "today." I'd like it not to include my sent emails
and only those I received.

Yes - don't include the sent folder in the search criteria.

Before clicking on the dialogue where you clifck Criteria, clck Browse,
uncheck the root of your data store, and check only those folders you want
to iinclude; i.e., don't include Sent Items.
