How to know if new email has arrived in sub folder?

How can I set Outlook 2002 to automatically open the folder tree when new
mail arrives in a sub folder? I have set up my folders as described by others
here. For example I have folders called 'Family' and another 'Friends', each
with sub folders Wei, John, Luc, Surinder etc. When new mail arrives it goes
into the correct sub folder but I cannot tell it is there. If I open all the
main folders I will see the unread mail in Surinder's subfolder in BOLD. I
don't always remember to open each folder and so I miss the new mail. There
must be a rule I've forgotten, can someone help please?

I dont think you can, allthough perhaps progromatically, Can you not leave
your Folder View with the folders expanded, then you will see the 'Bold'

I had to re install all my software on to a new hard drive and since then the
folders do not expand even though new mail has been directed to them. Two
replies (thank you) indicate this is not something I can get back. Either is
does or it doesn't! Has anyone else had this experience and fixed it?

Yes, I have experienced it and the Outlook Gods smiled on me - meaning I
have no clue when it was fixed or how. (Outlook 2003 and 2007)

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

While waiting for any Outlook God, I'd prefer to re-organize the system
myself: Assign categories to the incoming emails instead of sorting them
into different folders. Then switch to a view by categories.

Via the context menu (right click on a category) you can collapse all
categories, which allows you to scroll quickly through even large lists. A
bold header indicates that the category has unread items and while
collapsed, each category even displays the number of unread items.

Very nice solution! As usual - categories rather than folders works best.

Well, I was just browsing through here as I updated my message stores
and saw this thread.

I, too, have experienced non-expanding mailboxes, if that's an
additional problem raised here. The problem always stemmed from lack of
effective "read" permissions on the mailbox and subcontainers.

I'm wondering if Louise, when she restored her mailbox store, put it in
the same folder path with the same permissions and ownership.

FWIW

This is what I was trying to explain about the folders. It used to be that
they would have a bold header showing unread items etc.
I don't understand why it stopped happening unless it was an old version of
Outlook that was updated when I reinstalled everything. In which case, why
would a good feature be removed?
Someone mention Outlook Gods? ggrrrr!!
