Mapped Drive Unavailable while offline

I have a mapped drive to a directory on my laptop i.e. w:\ = c:\stuff. When
I am online (plugged into a network) I can refer to the information in that
directory as W:\this-n-that but, when my laptop is offline(unplugged) W:\
becomes unavailable and I cannot access W:\. Is there a way to make the
computer look to see if the drive is available instead of automatically
declining access due to a network plug being unplugged or is there a way to
create a virtual network to myself? To futher expand my question, I have to
refer to the data by drive letter (w:\) in order for the program that I am
using to work. I can't use UIC or Local Address. In addition, I am not
connected to a domain so offline file folders does not appear to be an option.
I have struggled with this for months now to no avail. Any assistance would
be greatly appreciated.

David,

Try "subst", to map a drive on your own computer. In your case, I think "subst
w: c:\stuff" should do.
