Managing Programs Running in Background

I am running Windows XP SP 2. I have a Celeron 2.4 Ghz with 248 MB of RAM. It
is running very slow. I have ran AdAware and SpyBot and removed some things.
It seems quicker but still not up to par. I can see various programs are
running in the
background. Could someone instruct me on how to stop things from running in
background? Thanks

That is the MSCONFIG program... but you need to be VERY careful what
you stop running, since removing the wrong program could turn your
computer into a very expensive piece of "desk art"
