I see them in Advanced System Information - Services. I
aslo see another list in the Control Panel/Add and Remove
program tool list. Bottomline is I'm guessing my PC is
slow partially because of programs running in the
background that are not needed. What is the best way to
search and remove option programs running in the
background.
thx.
PS: could you send an e-mail with the response in
addition to the posting. (e-mail address removed)

In MSINFO32 if you click to expand Software Environment and then click
Running Tasks, this will show all of the Programs/Services tah are actually
loaded and running on the PC. The Services module just shows all of the
available services and what their current status is.
The Control panel/Add or Remove Programs list simply shows all of the
programs that are installed, not the programs that are currently running.
Go to Start/Run and type msconfig and click OK. Click the Start Up Tab
to see all of the programs that are set to run when the system is
started/restarted. These are the programs that you want to take a hard look
at to see if they are really necessary to be loaded each time the system is
initialized. If you don't feel that one is needed, simply remove the check
mark from that program.
In that same dialog box, click the Services Tab to see all of the services
that are enabled to start at boot. Most of these will be needed, but some
may not. If you press CTRL+ALT+DEL once to bring up the Task Manager, this
will show exactly what is running, in the Processes Tab.
Initially, you do not want to be overly aggressive when disabling a service.
Most of these are critical to the stability of XP.
Go to the following websites to get a very good description of these
services.
