How to Stop Background Programs ?

I have MS Windows XP Professional SP2. I have System restored last week
(because of slow running). By Ctrl+Alt+Del, showed 25 Running Process after I
performed the System Restored. After installing AOL and MacAfee total process
was 29 (5-7 process for AOLSecurity Center, MacAfee, Spyware etc). Computer
was running very fast. However, today again the total processes are 44. The
system begins to run slow.

How to control unnecessary programs running in the background?

By the way, I have 3 different spyware installed and NO Spyware found. In
addition, only one Spyware Program is running (not all 3) in the background.
I always uncheck unwanted programs from Msconfig->startup.

Run->Msconfig->startup shous 13 boxes are checked only. Why 44 processes are
still running. How to control unnecessary programs running in the background ?

This problem increases when I install Oracle 10g or some GUI like
Powerbuilder, Sybase etc. The total process bumps up to 66 and the computer
becomes extremely slow.

I have HP Pentium-4 with 2.8 GHrz - Hyper Threading, 512 MB Ram in the
System, Running MS Windows XP Professional - SP2. I have 75% free in hard
disk.

If you think I need to turn off Services, please list what I must need to
keep (and turn off rest of the services in the background).

AOL - say no more.
Quite normal for it to self perpetuate the crap that it starts with by
adding additional crap until your computer grinds to a halt.

Do yourself a big favor and junk it.
Choose an ISP that doesn't think it can write software better than
Microsoft.
One that uses IE for web browsing & OE for emails and doesn't install it's
own crap for the job.

Ever heard the saying about reinventing the wheel?
