Start up programs.

It seems like I have a lot of programs running in the background and the
computer has been running really slow. How do I know what programs need to
be running and what doesn't? Also, how can I turn off the ones I don't?
Thank you for any help.

Download and run the [free] "AutoRuns" utility from Microsoft.

Available from:
http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/Autoruns.zip

This will tell you all the stuff that is configured to run (start up) on
booting your PC.

Also, you can get a list of 'Start-up' items, with check-boxes next to each
item to 'turn them off' in a [free] program that's already on your
omputer! -

Type msconfig.exe into the "Run" box on the 'Start Menu', and turn to the
'Start-Up' tab (at the top) to start this program.

You could also use AutoRuns to look for more information on what the program
items listed here are about.
