How do you set the background of a bitmap inserted in a powerpoint slide
match the slide background so that it does not have any white around it?Does
anyone know, I`d be very grateful if someone could tell me I`ve tried
everything and can`t seem to get what I want

You need to find the RGB color value of that color, and set that color as
the background color in PowerPoint.

An add-in called Color Picker lets you do this inside PowerPoint:

If the background of the bit map is only one color (eg white) you can use the
"set transparent color" tool in the picture toolbar to set it to transparent.
NB though that even the tiniest variation in shade and this wont work
