You cannot do that with vista. Your computer manufacturer should supply the
Vista DVD. Contact them. The dvd is necessary to reformat and reinstall Vista.

Some manufactures include a disc to re-install the OS (Dell), other have a
program on the computer to create a set of system recovery discs (Lenovo,
Sony).

What brand did you buy?

K

I bought it from future shop they told me it does not come with one i would
have to create my own but I can't find the correct place to do this.

Unless you bought an Acer, in which case your manufacturer will not give
you a disk but the lame excuse "Use the Acer Empowering Technology
tool to re-inatall the factory image"

They (Acer re-seller) told me "on the first boot up, you will be given
the option to create a backup disk"

I never got this option.

There should be a 'Create Recovery Disk' program that comes with the OEM
PCs, if not you will have contact the Vendor about receiving a Windows Vista
DVD for the cost shipping and handling.

as well as wha the other 2 said, you can always use a disk imaging software
like acronis to make an image of your current setup exactly as it is and
then restore it whenever you want..

acronis true image 11 is the one I use but there are others too

I was not given that option as well I am creating a backup with the E
rocovery but would like to make a Hard copy on dvd as well.

Then simply follow the computer manufacturer's instructions for doing
so. In plain terms, read the documentation that came with the computer.

Vista probably has an icon on the desktop called something like 'help
& support' where you can search for info. It has all kinds of info
about Vista. I don't know about Acer, but HP/Compaq customizes this
to include info specific to their brand. Search for something like
'create recovery disc'. It should lead you to a sequence of screens
that lead you through creating the recovery discs.

Best Buy charges a new computer buyer 30 dollars to create a Vista retore
disk and doesn't tell you that you can do it yourself! Acer documentation is
non existent except what you find in the computer help files. No paper
manual comes with it.

I confirm - except in Europe, the charge quoted to me was 60 EUR (that's
90 USD).

The 'system recovery' disk offered by Acer is NOT (as I understand it) a
Vista installation disk. That, plus the fact that a lot of ACERs are not
getting the option you got, makes their approach lame by any standards.

Not Me

I didn't say I liked it, or that it was good.
But that is what I have seen on Acer systems that I have serviced/installed.
It's a lot like the system HP/Compaq use, you can make a set of 'recovery'
CDs or a DVD, but only once.
If you lose or break it, it's $119 to get a premade set from HP.

If you're handy, do as vista user 43 suggested:

Get a disk imaging program.

Partition your disk so that you have one or more
data drives.

Clean up all the ads, "shovelware", waste, etc. from Vista.
Set it all up just the way you want it.

Then create a disk image and store it on your data
partition. Also copy it to one or more CDs or DVDs.

When you need to restore, just boot to your disk
imaging program and restore your personalized version
of Vista, rather than the ad-encrusted mess that
came with the machine .... and which will take all
day to clean up again.

BootIt NG is one option for disk imaging. I bought it
for $35 and have never had a problem with it. (Though
I haven't tried it with Vista.) It does all partitioning
operations plus disk imaging and allows you to make a
bootable CD. I've created clean disk images of Win98 and
XP that fit easily on one CD after the unnecessary bloat
is cleaned out.

That Guy

It is only 20 bucks from hp. Geeze what hp customer service number are you
calling? The create recover disk feature in HP doesn't work anyway. When it
asks for a clean disk for disk 2 of 4 it dies on the vine. If you complain
that this happens they will send you a disk set free.
