ok, here is what's happening. in the past few weeks my
computer randomly decides to spontaniously reboot. then
it takes about 4-7 tries to get it working again without
freezing. but still once in a while it freezes as well. i
bought this computer over then summer, but it has just
gotten this problem. and i can't even tell you how much
this irritates. i can't do much on here in terms of
writting essays for class or working on images because
i'm afraid it'll just suddenly shut down in hte middle of
something. now every time it suddenly reboots, it gives
me a "widows has just suffered a serious error" message
and i send an error report to the idiots at microsoft,
and the report i get back says that they are "researching
the problem". so does anyone know what causes this and
how i can fix it without throwing my computer out the
window?? i have all the virus programs running, so it
isn't any virus, and i have a 3.06 gigahertz computer
with 5XX ram, so it should be working!!!
anyhelp would be great.
thanks!!

WE know how you feel, but besides that you have not told
anybody enough to help beyond some basic suggestions.

First, the "error reporting" is a system wide
troubleshooting feedback method which will help with the
next update, patch or new operating system. There isn't
anybody sitting at MS waiting to respond to each and every
report, they probably get 10,000 a day.

Do a search on Google and on MS Help & Support for
"spontaneous computer rebooting"
and check that your power supply is working properly. Be
sure the computer isn't over-heating.

Don't be smug about your anti-virus, it only works on known
viruses and you must do the updates before you get the
virus.

Are you using a firewall? If not you may certainly have the
Blaster virus.

Greetings --

Spontaneous reboots and applications' locking up with memory
errors points towards defective RAM.

Have you tried to reboot into Safe Mode?

To get started troubleshooting the cause of your problems, we'll
need to learn what specific errors are occurring and being recorded.

To get the error message from the blue screen (a.k.a. the BSOD --
Blue Screen of Death), you'll need to turn off WinXP's automatic
reboot "feature:" Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced >
Startup and Recovery > Uncheck "Automatically restart." The next time
your PC crashes, you'll be left with a blue screen full of memory
addresses and other seeming gibberish. The top 2 or 3 lines of this
screen will contain information that can help solve your problem.
Carefully write down these lines and post the exact text back here.
Hopefully, one of us will be able to provide some insight.

Additionally, you should check your Event Logs to see if they can
shed any light on the matter, To do so, Right-click My Computer >
Manage > Event Viewer > System and Application. Record the specifics
of any red-flagged error messages and post the exact text back here.
Again, hopefully, one of us will be able to provide some insight.

Thanks for your help sofar mr.Chambers, i checked some of
logs, and these are a few of the errors:

"Fault bucket 49355839"
"Faulting application navw32.exe, version 9.0.5.1015,
faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault
address 0x00008ddf."
"Hanging application SxCenter.exe, version 1.2.0.1, hang
module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000."

those kind of messages are repeated alot in the log, for
different apps too...
