Major problem

I

I've just format / reinstalled my computer (Windows XP
pro), so the drive is pretty much clean. I have only
reinstalled some basic apps, and i ran accross a major
problem when trying to reinstall microsoft antispyware.
The installation went well, the software updated well, then
i skipped the scan. But first strange thing, real time
protection wasn't enabled by default.
When i try to manually launch real time protection (by
right clicking the tray icon), the application just exits
(or at least the tray icon disappears).
If i restart the app, every little application i launch
summons (at least) one new spyware tray icon (which
disappears when i hover it), and the gtCast....exe (can't
remember the name and already uninstalled the software =/
sorry) takes up my whole CPU.
I can't understand the problem, as i'm using this
application since day 1 and i'm basically installed the
same things as usual.

Here's what I'd try, in order:

1) update reinstall--start, control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft
Antispyware, change, update.

2) repair install--start, control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft
Antispyware, "Click here for support information", repair
(this is in here for superstitious reasons--I'm 99% sure it is the same
thing as 1, but its there, and it is labelled differently, and I don't know
whether it is the same thing for certain.)

3) uninstall Microsoft Antispyware, delete the installation folder and
subfolders, and reinstall.

My guess is that # 3 will do the job.

I'm at a loss--I wonder if this is some temporary situation--a stuck def
update, or something--these seem to cause CPU pegging at startup for some
folks occasionally?
